Provocatively titled “The Whites,” it’s a bravura move by Price/Brandt, coming in the immediate aftermath of the Ferguson and Eric Garner protests, but the poet of the proletariat brings it off without pandering or condescension.

Despite its occasional lumps, this novel is, at once, a gripping police procedural and an affecting study in character and fate.
